Swimming Tips

Swimming is one of the best all-around workouts there is for the body and with a few swimming tips you can improve your ability and really start to enjoy this sport. Swimming gives you a great cardiovascular workout and at the same time strengthens both the upper and lower body. You cannot find a better total body workout anywhere, plus swimming is one of the best cross-training methods for runners, cyclists, cross-country skiers, and many other athletes.

Swimming requires minimal equipment but be prepared to get a nice swimsuit, a pair of goggles to protect your eyes, and if you want an added leg workout, fins. Often, beginners prefer longer fins but shorter can help you gain speed. You can buy your own swimming cap, but those are often provided by indoor swimming facilities. A thick, comfy towel is a necessity as well, but may be available at the pool depending on the amenities afforded by the facility.

If you intend to use swimming as a method of working out, one of the first swimming tips you may find useful is to make sure that you vary strokes when swimming. Some strokes are going to be easier than others, but make sure that you choose a combination of strokes that work different muscle groups. Sometimes that means pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

If you are just pursuing swimming as an activity for fun and relaxation, this is obviously not an important consideration, but if swimming for a good overall body workout or for cross-training, it is necessary to do a combination of some or all of these strokes in each workout session: butterfly, breast, crawl, sidestroke, backstroke, and dog paddle. Also spend some time just freestyle swimming, choosing whatever stroke you wish, to work on certain muscle groups or just to relax.

Breathing is probably the most basic component of swimming properly. You have to be able to control your breathing. Learning the correct combination of breathing and bobbing is key to becoming a strong swimmer. It is ultimately the union of breathing and technique that will allow you to propel yourself smoothly through the water and gain speed and endurance.

Always respect the water. This is the ultimate of swimming tips. It probably is most applicable when swimming outside in open water but it really doesn’t matter if you swim in the ocean, a quiet lake, or an indoor pool, the truth is that water has the ability to kill a human being. It is the same sort of respect that one needs to develop for any activity that can be life threatening. And, when swimming outside, you especially have to think safety first. You have to develop a healthy respect for the forces of mother nature.
