Tips on Getting Pregnant

Tips on getting pregnant can sometimes be hard to find. Women spend the greater part of their lives trying not to get pregnant. But if you are ready, and looking forward to having a little one, here are some tips on getting pregnant.

It should be obvious that if you wish to get pregnant you must stop using all forms of contraception. But sometimes the most obvious things escape some people--so for the record--the first of all tips on getting pregnant is stop using the Pill, diaphragm, condom, or any other means of contraception. If you have been on the Pill for a very long time it may take a few months before your menstrual cycle returns to normal. Depending on your body it may only take thirty days or it might take a couple months longer.

Plan a doctor’s visit before trying to get pregnant. You want to make sure you are in good physical health and that everything is just right to give the little one the best possible start in life. This is especially necessary if you are taking any kind of prescription medicine, as some meds can be harmful to pregnant women. Go over anything you are taking with your doctor.

If you smoke, use drugs, alcohol or even caffeine, you have to quit before getting pregnant. None of these are easy addictions to break so be sure that you allow plenty of time and that you seek help to get you through quitting. Depending on your situation some of these addictions might even require hospital treatment for you. Not only will each of these chemicals harm your baby, they will also affect your fertility and your ability to get pregnant. If any of these addictions apply to you, you have to stop before the pregnancy.

Among the most important tips on getting pregnant is to know when you ovulate, and to have sex within the 2-3 days prior to ovulation. Don’t count on the calendar method to accurately predict when ovulation occurs. Very few women have a cycle of exactly 28 days and ovulate on the 14th day. Ovulation predictor kits are valuable tools as they can predict from your urine if ovulation is going to occur in the next 2-3 days. Once you have determined the time in the month you ovulate, start keeping a chart so you can track patterns should you have trouble getting pregnant.

The good news is that in the 2-3 days before ovulation, you and your partner should have sex as many times as possible. Many experts recommend that as soon as you decide you are ready to try to get pregnant, you should have sex a minimum of three times a week. While it’s true that you won’t get pregnant unless you are ovulating, predicting the actual day of ovulation is so iffy that being always prepared through frequent sex is the best option. A woman’s egg is only fertile for 24 hours but sperm can last for 3-4 days--that’s why sex several times the week before ovulation gives the best chance of getting pregnant.

The position in which you have sex also can have an effect on your chances of getting pregnant. The position with the man on top has the best chance of working. It is believed that this position allows for the deepest penetration, which enables the sperm to get as close as possible to the cervix. Sex with the woman on top or in a standing position can inhibit the flow of semen. After sex, the woman should not get up right away as lying in a relaxed position for a while will help the sperm stay in the vagina.

If you have tried numerous tips on getting pregnant and nothing is working, see your doctor. Most couples who are trying hard to start a pregnancy do so in the first six months to one year. If you have tried for this long a period of time with no results, your doctor will want to run some tests to see if there is any physical problem.
